The International Olympic Committee recognises the International Federation of Basque Pelota as the apex international body for the sport of Basque pelota. It's in charge of coordinating international competitions and establishing their rules. On May 19, 1929, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the French Federation of Basque Pelota, the Spanish Federation of Basque Pelota, and the Argentinean Federation of Basque Pelota came together to form the International Federation of Basque Pelota.


For both traditional and beach handball, the governing body is the International Handball Federation (IHF). Major international handball tournaments, such as the IHF World Men's Handball Championship (1938) and the IHF World Women's Handball Championship (1957), are organised by the International Handball Federation (IHF).


The ITF regulates the sports of tennis, wheelchair tennis, and beach tennis worldwide. Twelve separate tennis federations came together in 1913 to form what would become known as the International Lawn Tennis Federation. In 2016, ITF's membership included 211 national federations and six regional federations.


Volleyball is governed globally by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). The current president is Brazilian national Ary Graça, and the organization's headquarters are located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was in April of 1947 that France became the birthplace of the FIVB.


The sport of basketball is governed internationally by the International Basketball Federation, an association of national organisations. In 1989, the organisation formally changed its name from the Fédération internationale de basket-ball amateur (hence FIBA) to simply FIBA.
