It was the year 1970 when a spirited set of entrepreneurs decided to form an important club in Paris. French capital. Guy Crescent and Pierre-Etienne Guyot chose to merge their newly formed side, Paris Football Club, with Stade Saint-Germain of Henri Patrelle after the team from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 15km west of Paris, were promoted to Ligue 2. Real Madrid played a big part in the formation of Paris Saint-Germain. Three men were unable to come up in the dilemma of financial viability of the idea until they had a meeting with the president of Real Santiago Bernabeu.

Bernabeu advised them that launching an online campaign was the most effective way for establishing the new team. After an online petition had been signed by more than 20,000 members, Paris Saint-Germain Football Club was officially established on the 12th of August, 1970. The first time ever during French soccer history fans were financially involved in the formation of an football club. The capital club that was formed had an impressive fan base because of the merger and greatly benefited from an improved team. The team was led by Jean Djorkaeff, the club's first starplayer, PSG gained promotion into Division 1 and won in 1970 and 1971 the French Division 2 title in the very debut season. Due to a difficult financial situation and a tense financial situation, PSG was approached by the Paris City Council offered to take care of the club's debt and demanded to change their name to a new, more Parisian namesake which was "Paris Football Club." Following PSG President Henri Patrelle refused the name change, and the financial support was cut off The club disbanded in 1972. Paris FC remained in the top division, while PSG were relegated administratively to Division 3.

PSG began to take off after the fashion stylist Daniel Hechter took over. Just prior to the beginning of the 1973-74 campaign Hechter took over from Henri Patrelle as president and appointed Francis Borelli as vice-president. Alongside providing financial assistance for the team, Hechter was also the designer of PSG's iconic home team. After two promotions with French legendary Just Fontaine, Paris Saint-Germain quickly returned to the top division in 1974. It was ironic that it happened while Paris FC slipped into the division below, and was moved to the Parc des Princes, which at the time had been the home ground of PFC. Since the time, PSG have never abandoned the top division of French football, nor the Parc. Prior to this, PSG had been playing at various grounds, such as those at the Stade Municipal Georges Lefevre, the Stade Jean-Bouin and Stade Jean-Bouin, Stade Bauer, and even the Parc of Princes a few times during the season, despite the opposition of PFC.

The team was headed by Daniel Hechter, the Parisians did not win any silverware during the 1970s, but they began their long tradition of spectacular Coupe de France runs, established themselves as a top half division 1 team, and attracted some of the most prestigious players like Jean-Pierre Dogliani Mustapha Dahleb, and Carlos Bianchi. Following Hechter was barred for life from the game in 1978 by the French Football Federation in January 1978 for allegedly running an illegal scheme to corrupt the sale of tickets at Parc Des Princes Francis Borelli, who was vice-president up until that point was named the new manager at the Ile-de-France club. The trophy cabinet of the club welcomed their first silverware major trophy with the help of stars like Joel Bats, Dominique Bathenay, Safet Susic and Dominique Rocheteau along with PSG Academy graduate Luis Fernandez who guided the capital team towards two successive French Cup titles in 1982 and 1983. These wins have opened Paris the door to Europe with their spectacular European debut at the Europe Cup Winners' Cup that saw them progress to the quarterfinals in the tournament. PSG had its first league title in 1986. It was dominated by Susic Joel Bats, Luis Fernandez and Dominique Rocheteau and Luis Fernandez, the Red and Blues dominated the championship from beginning to end with a remarkable 26 games without losing to win the championship.

The second season following the league title wasn't as spectacular, despite the fact that it was. PSG ended up finishing 7th in 1987-87 French Division 1 and their first UEFA Champions League appearance that season was a total failure. They were eliminated by the minnows Vitkovice in the opening stage of 1986-87's European Cup. The next one, PSG avoided relegation on the final game of the 1987-88 season with winning 4-1 against Lens on the Parc of Princes. Indebted to the club, PSG had a brief respite and fought to win the title in 1988-89 together with Marseille but then fell to decline.
